Life at sea and what to expect

The waters of the Bering Sea can be a great opportunity for someone who is willing to dedicate themselves to the task at hand and contribute to the high intensity production of a world class seafood product. Beauty Bay LLC. is a commercial fishing company that operates in the Bering Sea long fishing for Alaskan cod, pollock and their bi products. The fishing vessel Beauty Bay operates with a crew of 19. Open positions become available based on each fishing trips staffing needs. The requirements of the work will include long work hours, must be able lift 50lbs without issue, can work in subzero temperatures and are prepared to do this in the high seas.


Advancement opportunities can happen rapidly for those individuals who show willingness and the  initiative to excel.

Before deciding to work out at sea educate yourself on the job and industry and discuss your decision with close family and friends. Be  sure you are mentally, emotionally and physically prepared for this job before leaving for Alaska.  Once a fishing vessel leaves port, it will not return until the trip is completed.

Q: What can I expect after I submit my application?

A:  Once you submit an application online you can expect to be contacted by a company representative regarding your application status and any further pre-employment steps you’ll need to take.

Q: What positions are available on the boat?

A:  Each vessel has a Captain, Mate, Chief Engineer and Engineer’s  Assistant, Cook, Steward, and roughly 18 crew members who work either on  deck, on the gear line or in the factory.  You can visit our job descriptions for more details about each position.

Q: Can I pick what job I want to do on the boat?   

A: Yes, if you meet certain qualifications for a specific  position.  Otherwise, all new crew are hired as general crew members and  will be assigned a specific department based on spots available for  entry level crewmen (deck, gear, factory, or steward) by the captain  upon arrival to the vessel.  The opportunity to cross train is there  with the right performance, initiative and length of employment. 

Q: How do I get hired as a deckhand?

A:  The captain will determine your placement on the vessel.  If you desire  to be a deckhand and/or have previous deckhand experience please inform  the mate or captain of your request to be a deckhand.  You may need to  start in a different position depending on the vessel’s staffing needs. 

Q: When does the fishing season start and end? 

A: We operate year-round, and therefore don’t typically hire seasonal or part time employees


Crew Positions

Captain

  • Carry a current USCG issued  license
  • Responsible for the safe navigation of the vessel. This includes vessel transits, docking, hauling & setting gear
  • Have command of the vessel and crew at all times
  • Have good communication skills
  • Accountable for all vessel operations and oversee production
  • Oversee Mates duties
  • Insure safety drills are performed per USCG standards
  • Comply with Gov’t reporting requirements
  • Work with management to ensure the vessel stays in compliance with Gov’t agencies
  • Have working knowledge of computers & communication equipment

Chief Engineer

  • Must have a current USCG issued License
  • Responsible for maintaining all machinery on board the vessel
  • Responsible for fixing broken machinery whenever possible & practice preventive maintenance
  • Keep captain and office apprised of any mechanical problems
  • Keep engine room clean, neat and organized
  • Maintain service and maintenance logbooks
  • Responsible for fueling the vessel and maintaining fuel logs
  • Comply with Gov’t reporting requirements
  • Work with management to ensure the vessel stays in compliance with Gov’t agencies
  • Have working knowledge of computers & communication equipment

Mate

  • Carry a current USCG issued License
  • Responsible  for the safe navigation of the vessel. This includes vessel transits,  docking, hauling & setting gear when the captain is off duty
  • Have good communication skills
  • Ensure safety drills are performed per USCG standards
  • Ensure vessels safety equipment is in good working order
  • Responsible for overseeing the daily job duties of the crew
  • Comply with Gov’t reporting requirements
  • Work with management to ensure the vessel stays in compliance with Gov’t agencies
  • Responsible for general record keeping
  • Responsible for all offload documents
  • Responsible for proper completion of personnel documents
  • Work as vessels medical/safety officer

Cook

  • Must have a current Food Handlers Permit
  • Responsible for cooking three quality meals a day for 22 crew members
  • Responsible for all food orders, food order budgets and inventory
  • Keep galley and equipment clean and in good working condition
  • Keep bathrooms clean and sanitized
  • Comply with Annex V MARPOL disposal of plastics and garbage at sea
  • Participate in monthly safety drills : Man overboard, fire, flooding, abandon ship
  • Able to work long hours in harsh conditions

Deck Boss

  • Supervise approximately five deckhands
  • Responsible for baiting, setting and hauling  longline gear
  • Able to work at the roller and operate the combi machine
  • Ability to train lessor skilled deckhands how to haul and set longline gear
  • Insure deckhands keep gear in good working condition
  • Inventory of all deck equipment
  • Assist in factory when needed
  • Assist in loading and unloading freezers when needed
  • Offload and backload vessel :  bait, fiber, food and supplies
  • Ability to operate the crane safely during offloads and backloads
  • Handle lines when tying and untying the vessel
  • Participate in monthly safety drills : Man overboard, fire, flooding, abandon ship
  • Able to work long hours in harsh conditions

Deck Hand

  • Reports to the Deckboss
  • Responsible for baiting, setting and hauling  longline gear
  • Keep gear in good working condition:  attach hooks and gangions, splice line when needed to replace chaffed gear
  • Able to work at the roller and operate the combi machine
  • Assist in factory when needed
  • Assist in loading and unloading freezers when needed
  • Offload and backload vessel :  bait, fiber, food and supplies
  • Handle lines when tying and untying the vessel
  • Participate in monthly safety drills : Man overboard, fire, flooding, abandon ship
  • Able to work long hours in harsh conditions

Factory Foreman

  • Supervise approximately seven factory workers
  • Responsible for all operations in the factory
  • Oversee the processing of the product from bleeding, head & gut, size grading and panning
  • Able to pan product to market specifications
  • Be familiar with quality control issues. Insure the quality of the product is up  to market standards
  • Take core temps to ensure product is maintained at correct temperatures
  • Oversee removal of product from freezers so it can be bagged and stored in freezer hold
  • Responsible for daily tally of product and submitting the information to the wheelhouse
  • Have HACCP certification or knowledge of HACCP procedures
  • Responsible for keeping the factory clean and sanitized
  • Participate in offload and backload of product, bait, fiber, food and supplies
  • Participate in monthly safety drills : Man overboard, fire, flooding, abandon ship
  • Able to work long hours in harsh conditions

Processor

  • Reports to Factory Foreman
  • Bleed, head and gut fish
  • Properly pan product to market specifications
  • Load and unload product from freezers (45lbs per case)
  • Bag and stow product in freezer hold
  • Participate in keeping factory clean and sanitized
  • Participate in offload and backload of product, bait, fiber, food and supplies
  • Participate in monthly safety drills : Man overboard, fire, flooding, abandon ship
  • Able to work long hours in harsh conditions
